Fro Fashion Week, Cafe 458, & Curly Card Night

I love “running the streets” as my grandma used to tell me, because I’m a social butterfly,  and I’m always down for a great event.

Although I never miss a par-tay, hunty *snaps fingers, twirls, & dips,* sometimes I do miss out on attending an event. Most of the times I miss out on an event because I didn’t hear about it, heard about it too late, or simply plain didn’t want to attend.

However, often to not I miss an event because of the first two previous reasons. And because I know what it’s like to say, “Dag I wish I’d known about that event, because I would have went.” I figured I’d be hospitable and share with you some fun events in your area, from time to time. You know, so you won’t miss out on a par-tay either.

Check out these upcoming events. You can thank me later, in wine!

Fro Fashion Week has returned. I got plenty of great products for my hair when I attended last year, so I made sure I purchased my tickets to attend this year too! Get your tickets to Fro Fashion Week, especially if you have natural hair!

Curls and Mo, Curly Card Night, NYC Events

My blogger sis, Mo at Curls and Mo, is hosting an event on March 9th for those in NYC! Her last event sold out, and I heard it was all types of fun. Trust me, if I lived in the NYC I’d be in attendance. You can purchase tickets now for $5. Tell her Miss Foodie Fab said hi!

Cafe 458, Atlanta Brunch, Atlanta Restaurants, Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency, Old Fourth Ward Restaurants

Cafe 458 in the Old Fourth Ward area of Atlanta is having a grand re-opening on March 3rd, and will be ready to serve you brunch.

I love Cafe 458 because all proceeds (including tips) benefit Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency (ACSS). ACSS is committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness in metro Atlanta and beyond, and empowering homeless people to achieve economic self sufficiency.

I’ve been to Cafe 458 on more than one occasion, and I’m glad to see they are back in business after a bit of a hiatus. For more information and to make reservations, check out Cafe 458′s webpage.

Do you have any fun events coming up, or plans for the weekend? Please share!

2013 Atlanta Chef’s Expo

The 2013 Atlanta Chef’s Expo, held on February 24 at the Georgia World Congress Center, was an event perfect for foodies, culinary lovers, and those that simply love to eat.

The Atlanta Chef’s Expo provided the chance for food lovers to see their favorite Atlanta chefs come from behind their kitchens and prepare specialty dishes for the public.

Chef Scott Serpas of Serpas Restaurant was on hand demonstrating why his restaurant is one of the top restaurants in Atlanta, and to meet and greet VIP tickets holders.

There were savory bites, sweet eats, and plenty of delicious dishes on hand. The expo was broken up into several categories and there was something for everyone’s palate.

“Restaurant Row” was the place to wander up and down sampling dishes from local Atlanta restaurants. Chef Rob’s Caribbean Cafe, Thrive, and Meehan’s Public House were some of the restaurants on “Restaurant Row” to name a few.

“The Chef’s Table” section of the expo held Atlanta’s private and independent chefs dishing out some of their best dishes. Chef Ameerah Watson’s, of Intimate Chef of Atlanta, fish and grits made many people come back for seconds to “The Chef’s Table” section.

“The Sugar Shack” section of  the expo was where you could get your sweet tooth fix. There were so many sweets to enjoy that attendees probably will have their dentists dolling out lectures their next visit. For future brides and grooms, or party planners, “Catering Alley” was the section to visit to and discover a catering company that may fit the bill for the big day.

However, food wasn’t the only thing on everyone’s mind at the Atlanta Chef’s expo. Cocktail designer Kitt Lewis was mixing and serving up signature cocktails at the Patron Mixing Lounge, and Infiniti was in the building with their latest vehicles and a chance to win a gourmet dining experience. Lethal Rhythms Entertainment’s was also on hand spinning tunes to keep everyone happy dancing with a fork and plate in their hand.

At the end of the 2013 Atlanta Chef Expo many attendees were full to the hilt, fatisfied (fat + satisfied), and ready to do it all again next year.

The Atlanta Chef’s Expo founders, Alisha Nesbitt and Cheryl Hasting of Enchanted Events and Enchanted Blu Events, accomplished their goal of celebrating Atlanta’s culinary talent.

Thank You to the Reynold’s Group for allowing me to attend.

If you like to eat, and want the chance to meet some of your favorite local chefs, then definitely purchase tickets for the next Atlanta Chef’s Expo.

Speaking of chef’s, do you have a favorite chef? Please share!

Great Date Deals Atlanta Brunch

One thing I love about about writing a blog, besides sharing my story, is having the chance to meet people I never would have never met if I did not have Miss Foodie Fab.

I’ve met some cool people along this blog journey of mine and one of those people is my blogger pal Dea of Pretty Girls Rock Dresses. So when Dea asked if the mister and I would be free after church, on Sunday, and would we like to attend a Valentine’s brunch with Great Date Deals Atlanta, I said, “Uh yeah!”

I mean a chance to eat, hear good music, hang out with my bloggers pals, and go on a date with my booski at the same time?! No. Brainer.

Now I totally was going to write this long flowery write-up for y’all, because you know I like to keep it entertaining around this here joint. However I’m writing this on the night of Scandal and, *Kevin Hart voice* it’s about to go down! This means I’m going to keep it short & sweet and hope you don’t pay me no never mind!

The Valentine’s brunch was a kick-off for Great Date Deal’s upcoming VIP events, and a celebration for Great Date Deals one year anniversary. Great Date Deals is a website where you and your boo thang can one stop shop for affordable and exciting date options, right where you live. The brunch was held at Organix Lounge in the Old Fourth Ward area of Atlanta.

There was food, mimosas, music, poetry, and giveaways. As a music lover my highlight of the brunch was listening to local Atlanta artists Diana Nicole and Gregory Jarre. Mannnn, thy could BLOW! Like, flat foot sang!

Oh and some of my fave fellow bloggers were in attendance.

Anywhoo, y’all get the point. I had fun at the Great Date Deals brunch! Be sure to check Great Date Deals out the next time you plan a date night.

Scandal is on. I gots to go! Peep my pics! *blows kisses*

Macy’s Lenox Celebrates Black History Month

If you’ve been hiding under a rock, or forgot, this month is Black History Month. Next to March and December, this is one of my favorite months.

Granted I’m black and proud 24/7/365, and every day I am grateful to all those who came before me and paved the way for all the freedom I have today. Yet the month of February is special to me because it’s a month when many people collectively take time out to reflect, honor, and learn about black history.

Macy’s is currently celebrating the life of Gordon Parks, a brilliant filmmaker and one of the baddest (MJ bad that is) photographers ever, during the month of February. In March, Mr. Parks would have turned 100 years old. In honor of black history month, and Mr. Park’s legacy and life, Macy’s is collaborating with The Gordon Parks Foundation & the American Black Film Festival to bring in-store events inspired by the contributions of Mr. Parks.

This past weekend I attended one of the in-store events at Lenox Mall. Macy’s Lenox put on a great event. Actor Eriq La Salle was the special guest, and he led a discussion on Gordan Park’s influence on film and the future of African-American cinema.

After the discussion Macy’s put on a par-tay. There was a DJ spinning 70′s tunes, soul food appetizers, and models showing off current designer’s 70′s era designs.

However, it wasn’t just a par-tay. Attendees who spent $50 or more in merchandise, during the event, received a commemorative Gordon Parks journal and a signed copy of Eriq La Salle’s new book, “Laws of Depravity.”

I had a great time. The food was delicious, and it was a pleasure to see one of my favorite ER actors in person. Mr. La Salle had a great personality and a 100 watt smile!

So without further ado, please check out some of the pics from the event! Oh, and after the pics be sure to find out how you can attend a black history month event at a Macy’s near you!

Natural Hair Blogger Photo Shoot

A while back I had the pleasure of participating in a natural hair blogger photo shoot coordinated by my play little sis and fellow blogger, Kiwi the Beauty. It was my first time participating in a photo shoot and I felt like a diva all day. I can totally see why celebrities do what they do, because having  an opportunity to get glammed and taking pictures is something I could get used to.

The purpose of the shoot was to showcase Atlanta natural hair bloggers and why they made the decision to stop relaxing their hair, or made the decision to never relax their hair. To learn why I decided to stop relaxing my hair, and what my favorite hair products are, please check out my interview on Kiwi the Beauty’s blog.

As for now, here are some of my favorite pics from the photo shoot. Enjoy!

Yes, Chef Marcus Samuelsson Event

Okay, so let me just go on and get this out of the way. Remember when I said I stan for Chef G. Garvin?! Well somebody tell G. to go on and get ready to share a seat, because I’m officially here to 100% stan for Chef Marcus Samuelsson. Yes Lawd, God, Baby Jesus, Moses, Vishnu, and all the saints! Oh yes, chef!

*sigh* Okay, now I’m back!

Recently I had the pleasure of attending Macy’s Culinary Council event here in Atlanta, at the Lenox Mall, for Chef Marcus Samuelsson’s “Yes, Chef” book signing. The event was the first time I had the opportunity to attend a “Meet the Chef” event, but it definitely will not be my last.

As soon as I sat down in my seat I had to restrain myself from bursting out a tootsie roll, because Chef Marcus is a beautiful person. However, the beauty is not solely superficial. True he has a killer smile, chiseled cheekbones, and a snazzy style! I mean my word, he was killing me softly on stage decked out in gold high top kicks, tie, jeans, and a crisp button down. However, his beauty shone from the inside too.

I know that sounds very corny and cliché, but it really did.

Chef Marcus touched my heart as he spoke of his love for his grandmother, and how his  interest in cooking came from spending time with his grandmother in her kitchen. He also gave advice to the aspiring chefs in the audience. The chef’s advice was: Be persistent and don’t give up!

Chef Marcus kept it real with the audience too. When he said, “Poor man’s food is the best food,” and encouraged the audience to, “Cook with leftovers.” Babyyyy, I said in my head, “Whoop there it is!” I knew right then and there he would be an immediate friend in my head, because I’m a firm believer in “poor man’s food” and cooking with leftovers.

The audience also had the opportunity to ask Chef Marcus questions. I learned Swedish Meatballs is his favorite dish. Duh, I mean he did grow up in Sweden! He believes cooking teaches life skills, Japan is one of his favorite countries to visit, President Obama (whom he has cooked for by the way) loves cornbread, Lea Chase is his favorite chef, and sushi is the one dish that gives him trepidation to prepare.

As far as the food, there was plenty of that too. Chef Marcus prepared three dishes for the audience. Fried Yardbird (if you don’t know what that is ask your grandma and ‘em), Crab Cakes with Chipotle Mayo and Citrus Salad, and Dirty Rice & Shrimp. My apologies for not having his recipes to share, however you can find Chef Marcus’s recipes at Macy’s Culinary Council’s website. P.S. I do have food porn pics though, so cheer up!

As a foodie, amateur chef, and a feature restaurateur (claiming it in advance), I had a blast at Chef Marcus Samuelsson’s “Yes, Chef” book signing event. From learning a new twist on dirty rice. He puts curry leaves, Indian cinnamon sticks, lobster stock, and red mustard seeds in his. To watching Chef Marcus interact with the young chef he pulled up out of the audience to serve as his sous chef, I had a” throw glitter and twirl” fantastic time!

Okay, now for what you have waited for, food porn pics! Enjoy!

Chef Marcus Samuelsson at Macy’s Lenox

If you have been reading this blog for a while, know me personally, or follow me on Twitter, then you know I absolutely love to cook! So it should be no surprise to you upon my discovery Chef Marcus Samuelsson would be in Atlanta with the Macy’s Culinary Council, that I became super excited. Like, I kind of wanted to bust out a tootsie roll, throw glitter, and twirl. In that order.

I mean first off, can we talk?! Chef Marcus is too juicy for words. Have you seen his cheekbones?! Who needs a finely serrated knife?! You could peel a potatoes with his bone structure. I’m saying there is no way I’m passing up seeing a talented and beautiful chef, share his secrets and tips for creating delicious recipes, live and in color.

If you are in the Atlanta area, you should make sure you RSVP ASAP to feast your eyes (corny pun intended) on Chef Marcus getting down at Macy’s Lenox this Saturday. Matter of fact, as soon as you read this I’d suggest you pick up the phone. You have my permission!

Fashion Night Out Atlanta, Fro Fashion Week, & More

So what had happened was….. Don’t you love it when a conversation or an apology starts off like that?! Yeah me neither, but uhm what had really happened was I was a bit of a social busy bee in September. So much so that instead of sharing with you all my September escapades in individual blog posts, I just Instagrammed my patootie off. However before you start with the, “I don’t follow you on Instagram” speech, I want you to know I got you mannnnn! Check out my pics from Fashion Night Out Atlanta, Fro Fashion Week, and more!

Eden Eats and G. Garvin Interview

Last month when I heard the Cooking Channel would be touching down in Atlanta on their Summer Eats road trip, in celebration of their second anniversary, I knew I had to be in attendance. I mean free food, drinks, and live music is all up and through my alley. However, there was another much more fabulous reason why Miss Foodie Fash had to be at Summer Eats: Chef G. Garvin aka “The LL Cool J of Cooking.”

I’m pretty sure not too many chefs have stans. I mean Beyonce, she has stans. But a chef?! Naw! Well honey I’m introducing to you Chef. G. Garvin’s #1 Stan! You’re probably thinking, “Girl stop it!” I’m so so serious. I stan for three people: Jesus, Jay-Z, and Chef G. Garvin. In fact when I told the mister Chef G. was going to be at Atlanta’s Summer Eats, he told me “Now please don’t get locked up because you busted out a butterfly in front of G. Garvin.” I laughed, I mean really who would do that?! Anyway, the butterfly fly is old, everybody knows I tootsie roll.

Kathryn from Frank P.R. was gracious enough to let me sit down with Chef G. Garvin and, the host of the Cooking Channel’s new series “Eden Eats,” Eden Grinshpan while at Summer Eats. Chef G. is just as cool, and LL Cool J fine, off-screen as he is onscreen. I told him I was super happy he was back on air as the host of the Cooking Channel’s “Road Trip With G. Garvin,” and we chatted about food, music, and relationships. Yes, y’all know I had to ask my boo in my head if he had a boo.

Chef G. is an Atlanta native but for the past several years he has lived in Los Angeles. One of his favorite LA restaurants is Nobu, but he let me know he appreciates a good hole in the wall restaurant meal as well. One of the styles of food Chef G. said many people may be surprised he loves to cook the most is French cuisine. This wasn’t too much of a surprise because many of his foods, even his southern dishes, have a French flair to them. I asked Chef G. if he ever experienced any issues as a chef who didn’t attend a formal culinary school, from chefs that did. Ever the smooth dude Chef G. told me he never experienced any issues, because if someone had a problem it was the other person’s problem and not his. As far as music Chef G. says he likes to listen to LL Cool J (but of course), DMX, and Ludacris when he is hitting up the gym. Speaking of the gym, Chef G. definitely has the guns to prove it and his arms are tatted up to show of all the hard work he puts in there. When it came to the topic of relationships I loved the way the biggest smile appeared on Chef G’s face when he told me about his special lady friend and how well she is with his daughter. I told Chef G. I heard wedding bells in the future and was expecting to see a full wedding special from the Cooking Channel.

Eden Grishpan is one of the most down to earth people I’ve had the opportunity to interview. During Eden’s interview I felt like I was having a chat with one of my girlfriends. Eden and I talked traveling, style, and of course food. Eden is a Le Cordon Bleu graduate and a Canada native. After graduating from culinary school Eden traveled the globe and went to India to volunteer at an orphanage, Ramanas Garden. While at Ramanas Garden Eden reopened the orphanage’s café and taught Ramanas Garden’s children basic culinary skills. After returning home Eden submitted a tape to the Cooking Channel about her experience, and from there she became the host of her own traveling show to find global cuisine in cities across the US, “Eden Eats.” Eden loves to travel and her love for culture is reflected in her fashion style. Although her style is super casual girl next door, and she loves to thrift, Eden also loves to dress up. One of Eden’s favorite ways to dress up is in traditional garments honoring the places she has visited over the years. As far as food, Eden isn’t afraid to try anything and her most favorite meal was at an open air food market in Bangkok. Eden calls Manhattan home, although her favorite borough for food is Queens, and she loves cooking Moroccan food at home with spices she purchased at Dual Specialty Store in the East Village. I had to give it to Eden, I was all ready impressed with her love for travel and culture, but she really blew me away when she said she is a beer girl. At that point she instantly became my new best friend, because you don’t find too many women who love beer, and I let her know she has a plate of red velvet pancakes with her name on it from Highland Bakery the next time she’s in town.

Please check out “Eden Eats” première episode tonight, August 17th, at 10pm ET on the Cooking Channel and tune in every Tuesday at 9pm ET for “Roadtrip with G. Garvin.”

Yep, I was in foodie heaven with Chef G. and Eden.

Share with me who your favorite chefs and on-air cooking personalities are!
