Six Feet Under Atlanta Restaurant Review

Where else can you eat spicy rat toes and not be judged for it, but at Six Feet Under Atlanta. Yes, you read that correctly. Spicy. Rat. Toes.

Last Saturday I accompanied my fellow foodies and food bloggers, JoVonn and Nika, to Six Feet Under Atlanta in Grant Park. I had never been to Six Feet Under Atlanta before, but after I heard they had an appetizer called, “Spicy Rat Toes,” I was all in.

Six Feet Under Atlanta is located in Grant Park, one of my favorite areas in Atlanta. Parking can be a bit iffy in the place the restaurant is situated in. However if you know how to parallel park and don’t mind a bit of exercise, it’s totally doable. If you love photography or looking at old homes, I’d suggest after you finish chowing down you walk around the area before going back to your car. Trust me, you will love the area and you’ll burn a couple of the calories you consumed.

The decor of Six Feet Under is very nostalgic, and I enjoyed letting my eyes wander around the walls of the restaurant. There were so many kitschy things to take in, and if you are in the mood for a good game there are plenty of flat screens at the full bar. Not to mention this place is huge, there is an upstairs and a downstairs. I’m all about space and Six Feet Under Atlanta uses their space well.

The servers at Six Feet are dressed funky, but not in an Old Dirty Bastard Way. More like an “I’m hip and I’m wearing all black,” kind of way. I will say our server was a bit negligent. Friendly, but negligent. We had to remind him several times for a booster seat or high chair, that we never got, and I don’t think we received one refill. I know he said he was new, so I’m praying he meant new to waitering. Cause otherwise, I’m not here for that the next time I visit.

As far as the food, I was greatly impressed with the menu. There are plenty of items on the menu that had me dancing in my seat, and this place is a pescetarian’s dream. Oh yeah, did I mention it’s a seafood restaurant? I didn’t?! So sorry! My bad.

Six Feet Under Atlanta’s motto is, “Don’t be selfish, share your shellfish.” Trust me when I say if you order anything off the menu, you will have plenty to share. Their portions are large, and my inner fat girl was well satisfied.

My “Spicy Rat Toes,” jalapenos stuffed with jumbo shrimp and wrapped in bacon, were super spicy. For some people’s palate this may be too spicy of an appetizer, but I love spicy food. So…. *shrug* I would have preferred if the jalapenos had been stuffed with something more than just jumbo shrimp, and my bacon could have been crispier, but overall it’s an appetizer I would order again.

Nika’s crab cakes looked delicious. The crab cakes were served with avocado, rémoulade, and micro greens on a wheat slider roll. Nika commented her crab cakes were, “Tender, flavorful, and have nice pieces of crab in them.”

JoVonn’s shrimp plate was covered with fried shrimp and jalapeño hush puppies. JoVonn gave her plate a thumbs up and said her shrimp were fried hard, just the way she likes them, and the jalapeño Tartar sauce on the side had just the right amount of spicy and sweet.

Can we have a pause and take a timeout to thank God from whom all jalapenos flow?!

Okay, jalapeño praise break over.

I ordered the shrimp po’boy, but I must have gotten the wrong memo because I wasn’t as happy with my dish as JoVonn and Nika. I know it’s totally my fault, because let’s be honest a po’ boy outside of New Orléans is not a po’boy. My po’by consisted of fried shrimp on a hoagie roll topped with spinach, shredded cucumbers, sweet onion relish, and cucumber wasabi sauce. Now, it sho was pretty. I give it that. But, it just didn’t wow me.

The hoagie roll was not crispy and flaky enough, and whomever put it together needed to up the seasoning next time. I had to bring the bad boy home and doctor it up Miss Foodie Fab style to get it right.

Overall I give Six Feet Under Atlanta an A-OK! While they didn’t knock my socks off with their shrimp po-boy, I enjoyed the restaurant and will be back in the future. I just know what not to order next time.

P.S. I shot all the pics with my new camera. More on that soon. Ain’t they purty?! * tootsie rolls out post*

Lee’s Bakery, Banh Mi Heaven

I read about Lee’s Bakery on Buford Highway via Yelp, and because the majority of the reviews were great, I decided to give them a try. Man, let me just say “they ain’t nevah lied.” The reviews were right on! Best Banh mi ever!

Lee’s Bakery place has the best sandwich I ever devoured. If they weren’t so far away from my house I would be there now happily munching on a grilled pork bánh mì, instead of telling you about them. The night after I ate my first Lee’s Bakery bánh mì all I could think was *Homer Simpson voice*, “Yummm Banh miiiiiii!”

So what is a bánh mì? Basically it’s a Vietnamese Po’Boy, or as I would like to now call it, “The crack of all sandwiches.” A bánh mì is a baguette filled with meat or soy fillings, fresh cucumber slices, cilantro, and pickled carrots. Of all the bánh mì places on Buford Highway, Lee’s Bakery is the best. My personal favorite is the grilled pork bánh mì. Oh and did I mention they only charge $2.50 for one to go, and $3 for one ordered in? Yeah, let me not forget that. You can definitely get your grub on here for cheap.

On top of bánh mì, Lee’s Bakery also serves a mean bowl of pho and boba tea (or bubble tea). If you go be sure to try the mango boba tea. Between a bánh mì, bowl of pho, and a boba tea you might need to be waddled out the door. They will fill you up and leave you satisfied.

As far as the service, it’s excellent. The staff is very courteous and, as a person with self-diagnosed OCD, I appreciate that the staff always double bag my orders to make sure there will be no “accidents” in the car from transport.

If you live in or around the Atlanta metro area and haven’t tried this place, please drop what you are doing and go now. Your stomach and your mouth will thank me later.

Unfortunately Lee’s Bakery doesn’t have a website, but you can Google them and they are located at:

Have you eaten Vietnamese food before, if so what’s your favorite dish?

You Call That A Coronarita, Across the Street

Okay before y’all start, yes I’ve been a bad blogger. Supposedly you are supposed to have an editorial board, post three times a week, set a post rhythm, yada yada, muah muah muah. To that I say, pppphhhht!

I promise to do better in the future, but hey shit happens. You still love me though, right?! Don’t make me start singing the Barney song to you. I will. You. Know. I. Will.

Recently the mister and I went out to eat at a local Mexican food restaurant. To say I wish we had went somewhere else, other than Across the Street, would be the understatement of the year. Le sigh, the food and service was terrible. I have been known to devour no less than two baskets of chips and salsa, in one seating, but I guess there is a first for everything. Across the Street’s chips were stale, and I don’t even have the words to describe how sub par the salsa was.

Across the Street, Chips and Salsa, Mexican Food

I ordered a Coronarita and instead received a “What the heck is that” drink! Across the Street’s version of a Coronarita is a weak margarita, mixed with a bit of Corona, and a can of Corona on the side. That’s not a Coronarita, that’s a margarita with a Corona on the side. First off, I don’t like to drink beer out of a can. Second, what happened to presentation?!

This is a proper Coronarita

CoronaritaNot, this!

Across the Street, Coronarita

Yes, I’m a Coronarita snob. Feel free to judge.

The food was also bland and flavorless, which was shocking because in the past Across the Street had a better quality of food. They were never “Hold my mule while I shout and slap my momma” delicious, but they were pretty good. I’m not sure if they got a new chef or changed their recipes, but neither my husband or I was impressed. He ordered a chimichanga and I ordered the three fish taco plate, both were sadly underwhelming. Being a Californian, I know good fish tacos. Across the Street’s are not in that category.

Across the Street, Beans and Rice, Burrito, Mexican Food

All in all, from the food to the unwelcoming attitude of the staff, I was not impressed with my visit to Across the Street. However, one monkey don’t stop my show, and Atlanta has many more Mexican restaurants to choose from.

Have you ever had a bad meal and/or service? Please share, I’d love to hear!

XOXO, Miss Foodie Fab!

P.S. If you like to try your hand at a Coronarita at home, here’s a fabulous recipe to try.

Date Night & Mexican Food At Don Pedro’s

Saturday before last my mister and I went on a date day for Mexican food and fun. Yes, date nights don’t always have to be at night. Wherever, whenever, or as Ms. Janet sang, “Anytime, Anyplace” a date night can happen. For those of you that follow me on Instagram, you may have peeped glimpses of my date day. It was super fun. The plus side to being married to your best friend, is you’re married to YOUR best friend. Whenever we hang out, foolery is sure to arise.

We started off with lunch at Don Pedro Taqueria on Bufford Highway. Don Pedro reminds me of home, Southern California, and I definitely will be back. For one, you need to be able to half way speak, or understand, Spanish to place an order. Second, the clientele appears to be 99% Hispanic. Third, they have an extensive salsa bar. I almost did a little dance when I saw the pickled carrots and jalapenos that were available, that made me know Don Pedro was authentic. Note: You can’t call yourself a Mexican food connoisseur if you don’t know about pickled carrots and jalapenos.

I ordered a burrito, also now known as the “Big Ass Burrito”, with rice and beans. It was huge!

I think it was even bigger than my head.

My burrito was vegetarian and, since my Spanish was rusty, I did not understand that a vegetarian burrito did not come with rice and beans inside. I was a bit bummed by that, but it was still good never the less. Plus, for $7.99 I could not beat the amount of food that was on my plate. My husband had a carne asada burrito and he enjoyed every bite.

Later we went to Laser Voyage Cafe, and that was a blast. I scored a great deal off of Loclly, I’ll have to do a post about on-line deal discounts at a later date, and we enjoyed every second running around in the dark taking aim at one another.

Oh, and drum roll please, I even managed to get some outfit pics in. Clearly when a camera comes out I lose my mind. I was so in love with my hair that day, I felt like a B-Girl and had to bust some funky moves. I’m from Brooklyn, yo! Okay, not really.

It was super hot that day in Atlanta so I kept it casual cool. I rocked camouflage capris from Old Navy, layered a couple of tank tops from Forever 21′s Faith Line, broke out my favorite sandals I bought in Oahu, and kept the sun out with my ASOS sunnies.

It’s good to be an Elite! (P.S. That’s Miss Foodie Fash in the purple with the Kool-Aid Smile)

As you can tell by the pics, I’m a Yelper. In fact, I’m a Yelp Elite. Yes, *pinky in the air* I mean you did know you were in the presence of fabulosity?! *wink*

If you are not aware of Yelp, please run your fingers over to their site. It’s a wonderful site where you can meet new friends, find the best places to eat, and if you’re really lucky you can find your future soul mate. Okay, kidding on the last part, its soooo not a dating site. Granted, there has been an actual Yelp wedding, and one or two couples have gotten hitched after bonding on a Yelp talk board…but again, it’s not a dating site and you didn’t hear that from me.

Anywhoo, last Thursday Yelp Atlanta threw an elite event at Lime Fresh Mexican Grill in Peachtree Hills. The event ranks as my favorite Yelp event thus far, and let me tell you there has been some amazing Yelp events in the past. The service was amazing! The staff was attentive, informative, and nice enough to fire up vegetarian tacos (after I inquired if vegetarian options were on the menu for the night).

As for the food, let me hold my drool. There was sooo much food. At one point I started clapping and singing, “Hercules Hercules!” I felt like I was at a repass. Okay, I have to shake my head at myself for that, but you people who know about a repass know exactly what I’m talking about. So don’t be judging me!

There was a salsa bar that had the hottest Habanero salsa I’ve ever tasted, a gallery of every hot sauce you could ever think of or want, tacos, Mexican desert, beer, wine, and margaritas. Lime Fresh really outdid their selves for the elites.

I enjoyed myself so much that I will be a return customer in the future.

See y’all at the next event!

XOXO, Miss Foodie Fab!
