Did you know March was National Frozen Food Month?! Yep, it is. I know you are probably thinking, “Another month dedicated to food. What next National Chitlins Sandwich Month?!” Wait, maybe that was just me. Oh.
In honor of National Frozen Food month I wanted to share with you my go-to secret for the times I don’t feel like slaving over a hot stove, but I still want to stay on my weight loss plan.
I admit sometimes I do not have time to cook a warm meal. At the end of a long work day, when I’m absolutely famished, I want something fast and quick to take my blood sugar from homicidal to happy. That’s where frozen meals come in.
I know you are thinking, “Really Miss Foodie Fab?! A frozen meal?! I’d rather eat cardboard.” Trust me, I’ve been there and thought that. Whenever I think of the frozen meals I would beg for as a child, because they had some prize or desert inside, I immediately cringe.
However, today’s’ frozen meals are not the heavily processed frozen meals of the past. Today many frozen meals are created and inspired by chefs, and made with simple and fresh ingredients. The flavor, ingredients, and nutrition in today’s frozen meals have come a long way. Now a days you can find crisp vegetables, tender meats, and more in frozen meals.
In the past a frozen meal could send your diet on a tailspin to failure, but there are many healthy and low-calorie options available on the market. Healthy Choice, which happens to be one of the frozen meals I buy often, has many meals under 400 calories.
In addition to being low in calories, Healthy Choice provides Weight Watchers points on their meals. This makes it sooo much easier to pick up a meal out the fridge and forgo spending unnecessary time calculating how many points your dinner is.
Many people think frozen meals are uninspiring and boring, and yes they are if you are simply opening up the box and popping them in the microwave. However if you break out your plates and silverware, I don’t mean the plastic kind, and add a dash or two of seasoning, you can take your meal from pfft to pow!
I “doctor” up my frozen meals all the time, and make sure I eat them on real plates and with real silverware, for dinner. I know it’s “extra,” but it really makes a difference. See what a little bit of Siracha, pepper, and basil will do to Healthy Choice’s General Tso’s Spicy Chicken.
Like I said, frozen meals have stepped their game up. There is no longer an excuse to treat them like the red-headed step-children of the frozen foods section. The next time you are too tired to cook, but still want something simple that won’t ruin your weight loss plan, I’d suggest you reach for a healthier choice. Get it?! Healthy Choice. Oh, okay then! Bye!
XOXO, Miss Foodie Fab!
P.S. Healthy Choice and Marie Callender’s created a video that follows two women on the adventures of their daily lives, imagining how new technologies will impact their routines, especially in the grocery store. Check it out.
ConAgra Foods frozen meals give families access to real ingredients like crunchy, freshly cut vegetables, homemade pasta and ripe fruit year-round. Just like most people blanch veggies before freezing them – ConAgra Foods does too – to help preserve color, texture and keep them fresh!
Give it a try sometime! Marie Callender’s hearty pot pies are filled with tender meat, freshly cut vegetables and Marie’s authentic golden, flaky crust. And Healthy Choice recipes use chef-inspired ingredients like, apples instead of sugar for tart sweetness and a splash of red wine for a punch of flavor instead of added salt.
